Cities With the Fastest WiFi for Remote Work
Internet speed isn't a nice-to-have for remote workers. It's the single thing that determines whether a city is workable or not. A gorgeous beach town with 5 Mbps download is a vacation, not a workplace.
We've spent the past year testing WiFi in over 50 cities using Sour Mango's WiFi Speed Test — in cafes, coworking spaces, apartments, and hotel lobbies. These are the 15 cities that consistently delivered the fastest, most reliable connections.
This isn't based on national averages or ISP marketing claims. It's based on real-world tests in the places nomads actually work from.

How We Tested
Every city was tested across at least 10 locations — cafes, coworking spaces, and residential apartments. We used Sour Mango's WiFi Speed Test to capture download speed, upload speed, and latency at each spot. All results are saved in the app, so you can compare your own tests city by city.
We weighted the rankings by three factors:
- Median download speed across all tested locations
- Consistency — a city with 200 Mbps in coworking but 10 Mbps in cafes scores lower than one with steady 100 Mbps everywhere
- Cafe/coworking reliability — how often speeds dropped below 25 Mbps during peak hours
1. Seoul, South Korea
South Korea has the fastest internet on the planet, and it's not even close. Every cafe, every subway station, every convenience store — the WiFi is absurdly fast.
- Median download: 350+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$25/month for gigabit fibre
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Near-perfect. Even random coffee shops in residential areas pull 100+ Mbps.
- Best area for working: Gangnam and Hongdae are packed with work-friendly cafes
The only downside is the cost of living is higher than Southeast Asia. But if internet speed is your top priority, nowhere beats Seoul.
Pro tip: Run Sour Mango's WiFi Speed Test at any Korean cafe — you'll regularly see numbers that would embarrass most European offices. Your results save automatically so you can track speeds across neighbourhoods.
2. Singapore
Singapore treats internet infrastructure like a national priority. Residential fibre averages 500+ Mbps, and public WiFi through Wireless@SG covers most of the island.
- Median download: 300+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$30/month for gigabit
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Excellent. Major chains and coworking spaces all push 100+ Mbps consistently.
- Best area for working: Tiong Bahru and One-North have great cafe-coworking density
Expensive to live in, but if you're passing through or doing a short stint, the internet will never let you down.
3. Bucharest, Romania
The surprise entry that shouldn't be a surprise anymore. Romania invested heavily in fibre infrastructure, and Bucharest is reaping the benefits. Gigabit connections cost less than a nice dinner.
- Median download: 300+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$10/month for gigabit fibre (yes, really)
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Very good. Most coworking spaces hit 150-200 Mbps. Cafes vary more but rarely drop below 50 Mbps.
- Best area for working: The Old Town and Floreasca areas have the strongest nomad infrastructure
Bucharest is also wildly affordable compared to Western Europe. The combination of gigabit fibre for $10/month and $500 rent makes it one of the best value cities for remote workers.
In Sour Mango: Check the Destinations tab for Bucharest's full cost breakdown — you'll see why it keeps climbing the nomad rankings.
4. Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand's internet has quietly become world-class. Bangkok condos come standard with 300-500 Mbps fibre, and 5G coverage blankets the city.
- Median download: 250+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$20/month for 500 Mbps fibre
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Strong. Most coworking spaces push 150-200 Mbps. Cafes average 50-100 Mbps.
- Best area for working: Ari, Ekkamai, and Thonglor for cafe density
Mobile data is the secret weapon here — 100GB 5G plans for $10/month mean you always have a fast backup.
5. Tallinn, Estonia
Estonia built its entire identity around digital infrastructure, and it shows. E-residency, digital government, and internet speeds that rival the Nordics at a fraction of the cost.
- Median download: 200+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$20/month for 500 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Excellent in the city centre. Every other cafe seems designed for laptop workers.
- Best area for working: Telliskivi Creative City and the Old Town fringe
Cold winters keep costs down. A one-bedroom in the centre runs about $600-$800/month — affordable by European standards.
6. Taipei, Taiwan
Taiwan's fibre network is extensive and cheap. Taipei is a dream for remote workers who need consistent, fast internet without paying Singapore prices.
- Median download: 200+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$20/month for 300 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Very good. Taipei's cafe culture is built for long laptop sessions.
- Best area for working: Da'an District and Zhongshan are nomad central
Pro tip: Use Sour Mango's WiFi Speed Test at Taipei's legendary cafes before settling in. Louisa Coffee and cama cafe locations vary wildly — test first, then commit.
7. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon's internet has improved dramatically in the last few years. NOS and MEO fibre networks now cover most of the city, and coworking spaces have upgraded their infrastructure.
- Median download: 150-200 Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$30/month for 500 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Good in coworking, hit-or-miss in cafes. Older buildings in Alfama and Mouraria can have weak connections.
- Best area for working: Santos, Principe Real, and Cais do Sodre have the best coworking density
The NIF tax number and rental market are bigger headaches than the WiFi at this point.
8. Barcelona, Spain
Spain's fibre rollout has been aggressive, and Barcelona benefits. Most apartments come with 300+ Mbps options, and the coworking scene is massive.
- Median download: 150-200 Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$35/month for 600 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Coworking is excellent. Cafes are less reliable — many have time limits or weak WiFi.
- Best area for working: Eixample and Poblenou (the "innovation district")
9. Tokyo, Japan
Japan's internet is fast and reliable, as you'd expect. The challenge isn't speed — it's finding workspaces. Japanese cafes aren't always laptop-friendly, and public WiFi requires registration.
- Median download: 200+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$40/month for gigabit
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Coworking spaces are excellent. Cafes are socially tricky — long laptop sessions aren't always welcome.
- Best area for working: Shibuya and Shinjuku have the most coworking options
Get a pocket WiFi or eSIM immediately. Sour Mango's WiFi Speed Test will help you sort the good spots from the tourist traps.
10. Prague, Czech Republic
Central Europe's dark horse. Prague has excellent fibre coverage and a growing coworking scene, all at prices well below Western Europe.
- Median download: 150+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$20/month for 500 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Good. The cafe scene is laptop-friendly, and coworking spaces are well-equipped.
- Best area for working: Karlin and Vinohrady have the best work-cafe culture
11. Dubai, UAE
Dubai invested billions in telecom infrastructure, and the speeds reflect it. The downside: VPN restrictions can add latency and complicate certain tools.
- Median download: 200+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$80/month for 500 Mbps (expensive but fast)
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Excellent in commercial areas. Hotels and malls often throttle connections.
- Best area for working: DIFC and Business Bay for coworking
12. Mexico City, Mexico
CDMX has pockets of excellent internet, but consistency is the issue. Fibre-connected coworking spaces are blazing fast. Random cafes in Roma can be painfully slow.
- Median download: 80-150 Mbps (highly variable)
- Home internet cost: ~$25/month for 200 Mbps fibre
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Hit or miss. Coworking spaces are reliable. Cafes range from 100 Mbps to barely functional.
- Best area for working: Roma Norte and Condesa — stick to tested spots
This is exactly where Sour Mango's WiFi Speed Test earns its keep. In cities with variable speeds, testing before you sit down saves hours of frustration. Build your personal map of reliable spots and share them with your Tribe.
13. Budapest, Hungary
Hungary's internet infrastructure punches above its weight. Budapest has fast, cheap fibre and a thriving coworking scene that caters to nomads.
- Median download: 150+ Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$15/month for 500 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Good. The ruin bar district has surprisingly good WiFi in its cafes.
- Best area for working: District VII and District V for coworking density
At $15/month for 500 Mbps home internet, Budapest might be the best speed-per-dollar in Europe.
14. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
KL's internet has improved significantly. TIME and Unifi fibre networks cover most of the city, and coworking spaces are well-equipped.
- Median download: 100-200 Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$30/month for 500 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Good in modern areas. Older neighbourhoods can lag.
- Best area for working: KLCC and Bangsar for the best coworking options
15. Medellín, Colombia
Medellín's internet has come a long way. EPM's fibre network covers most of El Poblado and Laureles, and the coworking scene is excellent for the price.
- Median download: 80-150 Mbps
- Home internet cost: ~$20/month for 300 Mbps
- Cafe/coworking reliability: Coworking is reliable. Cafes are inconsistent — always test first.
- Best area for working: El Poblado and Laureles for nomad-friendly infrastructure
The Bottom Line
Internet speed alone doesn't make a city great for remote work — but it's the non-negotiable foundation. A city can have perfect weather, cheap rent, and incredible food, but if you can't hold a video call without buffering, none of it matters.
Our top three overall picks:
- Seoul — if raw speed is your priority and you can handle the cost
- Bucharest — best speed-to-cost ratio in the world, and it's not close
- Bangkok — the complete package: fast internet, low cost, great food, nomad visa
